Oktoberfest Munich

The Munich Oktoberfest (Munich Beerfest) is one of the most famous events and the world's largest fair and also Europe’s largest beer-drinking event. This year’s Oktoberfest will be no exception. The big six Munich breweries host 14 beer tents between them: Marstall, Fischer-Vroni, Armbrustschützen-Festhalle, Ochsenbraterei, Hofbräu-Festzelt, Augustiner-Festhalle, Hacker-Festzelt, Schottenhamel, Pschorr-Bräurosl, Winzerer Fähndl, Löwenbräu-Festhalle, Schützen-Festzelt, Käfers Wies’n-Schänke and Weinzelt. Each of the 14 tents have three reservation slots each day: Afternoon, mid-afternoon, and evening. Reservations are typically for 3-4 hours, and if you have a reservation, the table is yours until your time is up. Tables hold 8 to 10 people. All of the tents have a unique aspect about them but none of them are any better than the others. Locals prefer the lesser known tents while college kids like the Hofbräuzelt. No matter what tent you are in, you’re going to have the time of your life. Just don’t drink too much and take some pictures so you remember it!

Authentic outfits for Oktoberfest in Munich are called Tracht (Tra-oct). Women wear traditional dirndl (DEERN-dul) dresses while men wear leather lederhosen (LAY-der-hozen) shorts. Almost everyone attending Oktoberfest in Munich dresses in traditional Bavarian outfits, so consider taking part yourself. Dressing in authentic clothing will help you blend in better, feel less like a tourist, and makes the whole Oktoberfest experience a lot more fun.

Beer
The huge 1-liter beer mugs called a Maß (pronounced: mass) are the standard drinking glass at Oktoberfest. Maß literally means stone in German and comes from the days when the large mugs were stoneware instead of glass. Don’t expect to see any decorative steins at Oktoberfest’s large beer tents, they have used the glass Maßs since 1872. Dunkel Bier (pronounced: dunk-al) is Dark Beer and Helles Bier (hell-las) is Light Beer which only means the color, not the calories. Radler (rod-la) is known in American as Shandy and is made up of 50% Helles Beer and 50% Lemon Soda/Sprite. Hefeweissen (hefa-vi-sen) wheat beer which is really big in Bavaria is served a special glass when you are in an old school bar hall. Russ (ruse) is just like Radler but with Wheat Beer instead of Light Beer. Russ is typically only in the smaller beer tents but you can still look for it.
Beer tents
Beer tents
Beer tents are giant, temporary halls erected for special celebrations. These massive structures are filled with long, banquet-style tables and bench seating and are meant to accommodate huge amounts of people. They also frequently include a stage for live music, elaborate decorations, and of course, lots of beer and food to go around. Beer tents are a cornerstone of Bavarian community and cultural identity.
