Virginia Beach & Norfolk, VA

Virginia Beach, a coastal city in southeastern Virginia, lies where the Chesapeake Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean. A 3-mile boardwalk stretches along its beach-lined oceanfront. The bayside First Landing State Park marks the 1607 arrival of the Jamestown colonists from England. The Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center exhibits ocean life including sharks, rays and sea turtles in globally themed habitats.

It's home to the world's largest naval base, so it's not surprising that Norfolk has long had a reputation as a rowdy port town filled with drunken sailors. However, in recent years the city has worked hard to clean up its image through development and by focusing on its burgeoning arts scene, which is spearheaded by the impressive Chrysler Museum of Art. The downtown Ghent District is where most of the town's cultural and entertainment action occurs, and the nearby Waterside District, a dining and entertainment complex on the Elizabeth River, is worth a visit.

With 35 miles of sandy beaches, a 3-mile concrete oceanfront boardwalk and nearby outdoor activities, it's no surprise that Virginia Beach is a prime tourist destination. The city has worked hard to shed its reputation as a rowdy 'Redneck Riviera,' and hey, the beach is wider and cleaner now and there are fewer louts. Beach aside, you'll find some lovely parks and nature sites beyond the crowded high-rises lining the shore. Expect thick crowds, heavy traffic and high prices if visiting in the summer.
