Munich, Bavaria’s capital, is home to centuries-old buildings and numerous museums. And the climax to the Munich beer year is, of course, the famous Oktoberfest, attended by over six million people. Oktoberfest is the world’s largest Volksfest (beer festival and travelling funfair). Held annually in Munich, Bavaria, Germany, it is a 16- to 18-day folk festival running from mid or late September to the first weekend in October. The Oktoberfest is an important part of Bavarian culture, having been held since 1810. During the event, large quantities of Oktoberfest Beer are consumed and there is also a wide variety of traditional foods including Hendl (roast chicken), Schweinebraten (roast pork), Schweinshaxe (grilled ham hock), Steckerlfisch (grilled fish on a stick), Würstl (sausages) along with Brezen (pretzels) and Knödel (potato or bread dumplings).
